Växjö, Sweden

Vexed by Växjö?

It usually helps if you can pronounce the name of the place you are travelling to. So we better start this post off with a Swedish lesson before delving into the delights of Växjö. While a degree of anglicisation is to be expected from us hapless tourists, in the case of Växjö you would in all likelihood completely and utterly butcher it, leaving the locals wincing. So please practice your pronunciation before proceeding:

Where is it?

Växjö is a city of about 65,000 inhabitants located in the southern Swedish province of Småland. It takes less than a three hour train ride there from Copenhagen and you can get there in under four hours by train from Stockholm.

Your visit to Växjö

As you can see from the Google Map, Växjö is surrounded by many lakes and forests. Being a fresh air deprived city slicker, I can imagine you’d want to head straight from the airport to take in all that nature has to offer. But before you do, it’s certainly worthwhile exploring Växjö and a few other nearby sights.

With its small scale, you can cover everything you need to see in Växjö on foot or bike. An obvious starting point is to visit the place that can be seen no matter where you are in the city, Växjö Cathedral. From there, you can either make your way south by bike along Lake Växjö towards the impressive Teleborg Castle, or head in the other direction to the ruins of the medieval Kronoberg Castle.

Even further afield is the location of the first store of that uniquely Swedish institution, Ikea. Located sixty kilometres south of the city, it now houses the Ikea Museum, and, believe it or not, an Ikea Hotel! You can choose to fill up on Ikea’s famous meatballs or head back to the city for a meal at the award-winning PM & Vanner, which has a menu based on the region’s produce.

Direct Flights to Växjö

Växjö has to be one of the more niche DailyDirect destinations. Its small airport mainly operates seasonal flights for Swedes looking for a bit of Greek or Spanish sun. However, in May 2018 KLM launched daily flights from Amsterdam Schiphol and seasonal journeys from Berlin were also launched in March 2018.

Amsterdam

You can fly direct to Växjö from Amsterdam Schiphol airport for as little as €99 return.

 Berlin

You can fly direct to Växjö from Berlin in about an hour and a half from about €147 return (from March to October).
